Consumers — people who buy things for their own use (потребители). A lot of consumers enjoy buying things during the sales.

Retailer — a shop owner or seller (розничный торговец). The biggest retailers usually have shops in the main city centres.

Catching up — reaching the same level as someone or something (догонять). Mobile phone sales are catching up with sales of sweets and chocolate.

Digging deeper into their pockets — paying out more money than usual Prices are going up, so I am digging deeper into my pockets to pay for basic necessities.

Handing out — giving something to people (раздавать). The government is handing out food packages to needy families.

Making ends meet — having enough money to live on Both my mother and father have to work because they have problems making ends meet.

Resist — stop yourself from doing something If I like a particular top or skirt, I can’t resist buying it in several colours.

Survive — live or get by (выживать, справляться). I can’t survive on less than 500 roubles a week.

Student loan — money that the government lends students to pay for their studies (студенческий кредит). My parents aren’t rich, so I’ll have to take out a student loan at university.

Pocket money — money parents give their children to spend as they wish (карманные деньги). Most parents give their children pocket money every week.

Household chores — routine jobs done around the house Many children have to do household chores such as washing the dishes and making the beds.

Can’t afford to splash out — not have enough money to buy luxuries or expensive things I can’t afford to splash out on new dresses for every wedding I am invited to.

Shopping sprees — buying lots of things at the same time I always go on a shopping spree to buy things for my birthday party.

Saving up — gradually collecting money by spending less than usual (копить деньги). I am saving up for a holiday abroad.
