Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants make their own food.

It happens in the leaves. Leaves contain chlorophyll, which absorbs sunlight.

What plants need: sunlight, water, carbon dioxide and chlorophyll.

What happens: the plant takes in water through its roots and carbon dioxide from the air through tiny holes in the leaves. Using sunlight, the plant changes these substances into glucose.

What is produced: glucose and oxygen.

Why it is important: photosynthesis gives plants food and releases oxygen into the air.
