If I were asked to write a poem about the future, I would express hope that our fascination with technology does not separate us from our souls. I would hope that all sorts of gadgets don’t separate us from our respect of each other. I don’t know if that could be said in a poem, though. My office is full of computers but I still write on long yellow pads. I have three in front of me right now.
What scares me in the new century is isolation. We are a people, we are a school, we are a group. And we are weakened when we are separated. But there’s a uniqueness in each one of us. However, when there’s a crisis, being all together is important. You can see that we are at our best and our strongest at such periods of time. Something pushes us to each other when there’s a hurricane or a fire. I hate the crisis but I love to turn on the television and hear that firefighters or rescue teams are coming from all over the country to help.
I also believe in the growing role of art. The artist is always trying to show the truth of our experience, not necessarily the facts. Sometimes the facts obscure the truth because there are so many of them. But if you hit the truth, you recognize it, whether it is spoken to you or you hear it in a piece of music.
