The systems of education in the United Kingdom and in Russia are similar in some ways, but there are also important differences.
In the United Kingdom, children usually start school at the age of 5, while in Russia they begin at 6 or 7. In both countries, school education is divided into several stages, but the names and length of these stages are different. In Britain, pupils usually go to primary school, then secondary school, and later may study in sixth form or college. In Russia, school education includes primary school, basic secondary school and upper secondary school.
Pupils in both countries study subjects such as English, Maths, Science, History and Geography. However, the exact list of subjects may differ. At school, British pupils take GCSEs and later A-levels, while Russian pupils take final exams, including the Unified State Exam.
In both countries, students prepare for university education at school, but in Britain they often choose the subjects they need for future study earlier. To enter university in the UK, students usually need good A-level results. In Russia, students enter university after passing the Unified State Exam and, in some cases, additional entrance exams.
At university, tuition and living costs are usually paid by students in both countries, although there are scholarships and grants. Higher education in the UK includes undergraduate and postgraduate stages. In Russia, higher education also has several stages: bachelor’s degree, specialist degree, master’s degree and postgraduate study.
