7 You have received a letter from your English-speaking friend. In his letter he writes:
I’ve just returned from my journey to France where I took part in the International Conference of Young Inventors. That was great, I learnt a lot of things and met many interesting people. And how are things with you? Do you still want to go to university after school? What is the field of your interests — arts oil sciences? Whendostateexamsbegin?

Write a letter to Chris. In your letter:
• answer his questions;
• ask Chris three questions about his plans for the near future.
Are you satisfied with the marks your teacher has given you for your written papers? Can you improve them? Are you satisfied with your total result? Can your total result be better? What does it depend on?
Look through the steps of Unit 3 and say:
• if the material of the unit was interesting, useful, widening your scope
• if you found any new ideas in the texts and exercises of the unit
• if any of the problems raised in the unit were surprising, making you think them over
• if the unit helped you to revise grammar and vocabulary
• what new information about the English language you have learnt
• what things were easy/difficult
• what tasks you specifically remember and why
Project Work Three
Prepare a computer presentation on the topic “Living in the Age of Communication”. You may consider these ideas:
• Why the 21st century is called the “age of communication”.
• In what way communication has changed and is changing our lives.
• The advantages of living in the age of communication.
• The disadvantages of living in the age of communication.
• What kind of communication you use (how you use them and why you use them).
• Strong and weak points of the global network.
• If it is possible to stop the new technological revolution.
Be ready to give your presentation in class. It shouldn’t take longer than five—seven minutes. Try to make your presentation interesting, illustrate it with photos, pictures etc.

Comment on the statement: Computers are a blessing that modern societies possess.
Nowadays computers play a very important role in our lives, and many people cannot imagine their daily routine without them. In my opinion, computers are really a blessing for modern society because they make our life easier, faster and more comfortable.
First of all, computers help us work and study more effectively. We can find information in a few seconds, write and edit texts, make presentations and communicate with people all over the world. Secondly, computers save a lot of time. Many tasks that used to take hours can now be done in minutes. Finally, computers are useful for entertainment and creativity: people can listen to music, watch films, draw, design and even create their own projects.
However, some people think that computers are dangerous because they make us lazy and reduce face-to-face communication. They also say that people spend too much time in front of screens and may become dependent on technology.
I do not fully agree with this opinion. Of course, computers can be harmful if we use them too much, but the problem is not the computer itself. It depends on how people use it. If we use computers wisely, they bring us many advantages and do not replace real life.
To sum up, I believe that computers are a great benefit for modern societies. They help us learn, work and communicate, and their positive influence is much stronger than the possible disadvantages.

Letter to Chris
Dear Chris,
Thank you for your letter. I was glad to hear about your trip to France and the International Conference of Young Inventors. It sounds really exciting!
As for me, I still want to go to university after school. I am interested in sciences, especially computer science, because I would like to work with modern technologies in the future. My state exams begin in May, so I have to prepare for them seriously now.
What are your plans for the near future? Are you going to continue taking part in conferences? Will you visit any other countries soon? What do you want to do after school?
Best wishes,
[Your name]

I am generally satisfied with the marks my teacher has given me for my written papers, but I think I can improve them. My total result is also quite good, though it can be better. It depends on how hard I work, how carefully I prepare for lessons and how much time I spend revising grammar and vocabulary.
The material of Unit 3 was interesting and useful. It widened my scope and gave me some new ideas. I found the texts and exercises thought-provoking, and some of the problems discussed in the unit made me think them over. The unit also helped me revise grammar and vocabulary.
I learnt more about the use of modal verbs, conditionals and word formation. Some tasks were easy for me, while others were more difficult, especially writing tasks. I especially remember the texts about science and technology because they were relevant and interesting.
Project Work Three
Living in the Age of Communication
1. The 21st century is called the age of communication because people can share information instantly with the help of modern technologies.
2. Communication has changed our lives a lot. We can talk to people far away, study online, work remotely and get news very quickly.
3. The advantages of this age are speed, convenience and access to information. It is easier to keep in touch with friends and family.
4. The disadvantages are dependence on gadgets, less face-to-face communication and the risk of false information.
5. I use the Internet, mobile phones and social networks every day because they are fast and convenient.
6. The global network has strong points: it connects people and gives access to knowledge. Its weak points are addiction and privacy problems.
7. I do not think it is possible to stop the technological revolution, because technology is developing too fast and people need it in everyday life.
