6. Comment on one of the following statements.

Education is a continual, lifelong process.

I strongly agree with this statement. Education does not end when a person leaves school or university. In fact, learning continues throughout life because the world is constantly changing. First, new technologies, professions and social trends appear every year, so people need to keep learning to stay competent. Second, education helps us develop our personality, think critically and make better decisions. Finally, lifelong learning gives people more opportunities in their careers and personal lives.

Some people think that education is necessary only in youth, because after graduation a person should focus on work and practical experience. They also believe that too much studying takes time and energy away from real life.

I do not agree with this opinion. Practical experience is important, but it is not enough on its own. Without new knowledge, a person may quickly fall behind. Moreover, learning can be interesting and useful at any age, and it helps people adapt to new situations.

To sum up, education is really a lifelong process, and everyone should continue learning in order to grow and succeed.

7. Letter to John

Dear John,

Thanks for your letter. It was great to hear from you.

As for me, I have already made up my mind. I am going to continue my education after school. I want to enter university and study there, because I would like to get a good profession in the future. I am planning to apply this summer.

French sounds interesting! Why did you decide to learn it? How often do you have French lessons? Do you enjoy learning it?

I hope your Science exam goes well.

Write back soon.

Best wishes,
Alex

Your total result?

I think the material of Unit 1 was interesting and useful. It widened my scope and gave me new ideas about education, careers and future plans. Some texts and exercises were thought-provoking, especially the tasks about choosing a profession and making decisions about the future. The unit also helped me revise grammar and vocabulary.

The most difficult tasks were writing a comment and a letter, because they required clear ideas and correct language. The easiest tasks were vocabulary exercises and short grammar drills. I especially remember the tasks about career choices, because they were close to real life and made me think about my own future.

Project Work One

Steps to Your Career

I would like to become a doctor in the future. This job needs a qualification, so I will have to study at a medical university. It usually takes many years to get this profession, but I think it is worth it.

A doctor is a responsible, useful and respected job. I have chosen it because I want to help people and make their lives better. I would like to work in my home country, because I want to be useful to the people around me.

To master English, I plan to read medical articles, watch educational videos and communicate with people from other countries. English will help me in my future career and make me more confident.
