  1. You should write a story.
  2. Your target reader is an international magazine reader / the judges of the short story competition.
  3. The main character(s) can be any people you choose.
  4. The story can be about a surprising event or a special birthday present.

Sample story 1:

I had never been so surprised in my whole life. It was my seventeenth birthday, and I thought my parents had forgotten about it because they were acting so strangely all morning. They kept smiling at each other and telling me to stay in my room. I was disappointed, but I tried not to show it.

In the evening, my best friend Anna came over and said she had something for me. She handed me a small box wrapped in blue paper. Inside was an old silver key and a note that said, “Go to the attic.”

I ran upstairs and opened the attic door. To my amazement, the room was full of balloons, candles and all my friends. My parents had secretly prepared a surprise party for me. Then they gave me the best present of all — a puppy I had wanted for years. I was speechless. It was truly the most unforgettable birthday of my life.

Sample story 2:

I had never been so surprised in my whole life. It happened on my eighteenth birthday, when I came home from school and found a small envelope on my desk. On the front, someone had written: “Open me after dinner.” I was curious, but I waited patiently.

After dinner, I opened the envelope and found two train tickets to Paris. At first, I thought it was a joke. Then my mother smiled and said, “Pack your bag. We’re leaving tomorrow morning.” I could hardly believe my ears.

The next day, we arrived in Paris, where my parents had planned a weekend trip just for me. They also gave me a beautiful watch with my initials on it. It was the perfect birthday present, and I will always remember that wonderful surprise.
