a) Read the rubrics. Which asks you to: explain and suggest? describe and explain?
1. Why do you enjoy reading? What books would you advise someone your age to read? We will publish the best article and give the writer L100.
2. What is the best concert you’ve ever been to? Why did you like it? What was so special about it? Write an article answering these questions and the best one will receive two tickets to the Rockwave Music Festival.
b) Read the models and match them to the rubrics. What plan does each model follow? Which techniques have been used in the opening and closing paragraphs? In pairs, write alternative opening/closing paragraphs for each model using a different technique.
c) Think of an appropriate title for each article.

Plan of Model 1: introduction — reasons for enjoying reading — books to recommend — closing comment.
Plan of Model 2: introduction — description of the concert — what made it special — closing comment.
Opening techniques: Model 1 uses a general statement and a personal opinion. Model 2 uses a personal statement about a favourite activity and mentions the best concert.
Closing techniques: Model 1 ends with a quotation. Model 2 ends with a personal comment and recommendation.
Alternative opening/closing paragraphs:
Model 1 opening: Books have always been an important part of my life, and I believe everyone should read more often.
Model 1 closing: If you are looking for a way to relax and learn something new at the same time, pick up a good book today.
Model 2 opening: I have been to many concerts, but one of them stands out as the most exciting and unforgettable.
Model 2 closing: It was a fantastic evening, and I will always remember it as one of the best experiences of my life.
