Lonesome George lived in the Galapagos Islands and was the last member of his subspecies. He died in 2012. Some species of Galapagos giant tortoises are facing extinction because of hunting in the past. Lonesome George, from a subspecies previously thought to be extinct, was discovered in 1971 and was then placed in the Charles Darwin Research Station. Unfortunately, he couldn’t find a mate. According to researchers, this was possibly because he was too different from the other tortoises. Eventually seventeen tortoises with a very similar DNA to Lonesome George were found. By breeding them, it is hoped to recreate George’s ‘lost’ ancestral genes.
