- Organisation: the essay should follow a clear plan; the introduction should state the topic clearly; each main point should be given in a separate paragraph; each body paragraph should begin with a topic sentence; supporting sentences should justify the ideas; the conclusion should summarise the main points.
- Language: the style should be appropriate; advanced vocabulary and linkers should be used; ideas should be presented in a logical sequence; the essay should start and finish in an interesting way; spelling, grammar and punctuation should be correct.
