Listen to two people talking about spending money on space exploration. Who’s in favour of/against it? What points does each person mention?

Mike is against space exploration. He thinks that the money spent on it could be used to solve social problems such as poverty, poor housing and inadequate healthcare. He believes that it would be better to feed hungry people, care for the sick and provide homes for the homeless.

Sally is in favour of space exploration. She points out that the money spent on space projects is used on Earth for manufacturing, research and development, creating jobs and paying people’s salaries. She also says that space exploration accounts for only 0.5% of the US national budget, while social programmes receive almost one hundred times more. In addition, the space programme promotes scientific and technological progress and inspires young people to become scientists and engineers.
