Maslenitsa is one of the most famous traditional festivals in Russia. It is celebrated at the end of winter, usually in February or early March, before Lent. The festival has ancient roots and goes back to pagan times, when people welcomed the sun and the coming of spring.
During Maslenitsa, people bake and eat blini — thin pancakes that symbolize the sun. Families and friends visit each other, take part in games, sing songs, dance, and enjoy outdoor activities. In many towns and villages, there are fairs, concerts, and folk performances.
The history of Maslenitsa is connected with old Slavic traditions. Later, it became part of the Orthodox calendar. Today, it is both a religious and a folk holiday. The last day of Maslenitsa is called Forgiveness Sunday. On this day, people ask each other for forgiveness and prepare for Lent.
Maslenitsa is a bright and cheerful festival that brings people together and helps them feel the spirit of Russian culture.
