Earth’s plates, or tectonic plates, are large pieces of the Earth’s lithosphere. They move very slowly on the semi-molten layer below them. Their movement causes earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and the formation of mountains.

There are several major plates, including the Pacific Plate, the Eurasian Plate, the African Plate, the North American Plate, the South American Plate, the Antarctic Plate and the Indo-Australian Plate.

The Pacific Plate is the largest one. It covers most of the Pacific Ocean. The Eurasian Plate includes Europe and most of Asia. The African Plate covers the continent of Africa and parts of the surrounding ocean floor.

The plates are constantly moving, but the movement is very slow, so people do not notice it in everyday life. However, over millions of years, this movement changes the shape of the Earth’s surface.
