The Amur (Siberian) Tiger
The Amur tiger, also called the Siberian tiger, is the largest wild cat in the world. It lives mainly in the forests of the Russian Far East, especially in the Amur region, and also in parts of northeastern China.
This tiger has thick fur, which helps it survive the cold climate. Its coat is orange with black stripes, and the fur on its belly is lighter. An adult tiger can be up to 3.3 metres long, including the tail, and can weigh more than 200 kilograms.
Amur tigers are solitary animals. They hunt alone and usually feed on deer, wild boar and other large animals. They are strong swimmers and can move quietly through the forest.
Today the Amur tiger is endangered. The main threats are poaching, loss of habitat and a shortage of prey. Conservation programmes are helping to protect these beautiful animals, but they still need our care and attention.
