Alan was working as a nurse when he saw a report on TV about a health project in India. “It really came out of the blue. I realised that this was something I wanted to do.” Alan was soon on his way to a remote village in India. “I was working with local eye doctors who were getting treatment and information out to the villagers. Did you know that 80% of blindness can be prevented with the right care?” Alan says the look on people’s faces when they see clearly for the first time in their lives is literally indescribable.
When Luke left university, he travelled the world before setting down. His first stop was the Amazon rainforest living and working in a tribal village. “Everyday I would get up at the crack оf dawn and help the tribe. What struck me was their attitude to the environment respect the land and for every tree they cut down they plant another. They understand the balance of nature. That free is not only for their use, but it is also a home to any number of species.”
Jane and Harry were looking forward to a quiet retirement when Harry read about an unpaid teaching post in a tiny village in Africa. After a lot of thought they decided to apply. “We live a very simple life now. Home is a thatched hut, water is from the river and we grow our own food.” But Jane and Harry have no intention of leaving the village. The children are eager to attend the lessons and Jane and Harry say their real reward is a child’s smile at the end of the day.
Dan is an engineer who specialises in water systems. “My company was asking for volunteers to help with irrigation in Africa and this seemed like the experience of a lifetime.” They put him up in a hotel in the capital and he started showing the locals how to build and repair their own systems. He only went to the villages on rare occasions, but was pleasantly surprised by the local people there. “They all work together and there’s none of the time-wasting that you get back at home.”
Alan and Margaret Peters are a retired couple from Devon in South West England. When they heard that the National Trust were restoring Agatha Christie’s beautiful old holiday home, Greenways, they volunteered to help with the work. Alan restores antique pottery and this allowed him to become part of the ceramic conservation team on the project. His wife helped with cleaning antique picture frames and tiled fireplaces. Now the house is open to the public and Alan and Margaret say they are proud to have had the opportunity to play a part in the transformation of the property.
When Natasha went to England to study English, she was determined to take advantage of any opportunity to practise speaking the language. One of her teachers suggested that she should volunteer to work in a local Red Cross charity shop that sells second hand goods to raise funds. “Working here allows me to practise everything I am learning in my classes and more. My English has improved so much,” she says. “In addition, it is wonderful to know that I am helping people locally and internationally, too.”
At first I thought I had misread the heading, but it really did say cycling from palace to palace’ and not place to place’. I’m a keen cyclist and it’s a great way for me to volunteer to help a charity. The Prince’s Trust does so much to help under-privileged young people in the UK. I must admit I enjoyed it very much; the 45 mile route from Buckingham Palace took us over Putney Bridge through Richmond Park and on to Windsor Palace, it was a beautiful day and everyone was so friendly. I have every intention of doing it again next year.
