There is more than one example for each rule. 1 We use «the» with the names of countries when they include words, such as state, republic, kingdom, etc. 2 We do not use «the» with the names of countries. There are some exceptions: the Netherlands, the Sudan, the Vatican City. 3 We do not use «the» with the names of languages when they are NOT followed by the word language.
