One of the most famous Russian plays is The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekhov. The play tells the story of an old aristocratic family that is losing its estate. Madame Ranevskaya returns home after many years abroad. She is happy to see the cherry orchard again, but she cannot save the family property from being sold. Lopakhin, a merchant, suggests cutting down the orchard and building summer cottages on the land. However, Ranevskaya and her brother Gayev do not take his advice seriously. They live in the past and cannot adapt to the new life. In the end, Lopakhin buys the estate himself. The cherry orchard is cut down, and the family leaves the house forever. The play shows the conflict between the old and the new way of life. It also makes the reader think about memory, change, and the loss of the past.
