I’m writing to ask you for advice on a private but very important My daughter is completing her school education and naturally the family are involved in the discussion about her future career. Yesterday my daughter said that she had made her choice and she would be a tube train driver. It sounds so weird to me! Traditionally only boys could be train drivers, and I can’t imagine my delicate girl doing a job like that! What arguments should I use to talk her out of it? I think Sophie should accept her daughter’s choice and support her. Nowadays women can work in any profession, including being a tube train driver. If her daughter is interested in this job and is ready to study and work hard, she should be allowed to follow her dream.

It is important not to judge the profession by old traditions. A good job depends on a person’s abilities, responsibility and skills, not on gender. Sophie can talk to her daughter calmly, ask why she chose this career and discuss the difficulties and advantages with her.

So, my advice is: do not try to talk her out of it. Be understanding and help her make an informed decision.
