Speaker 1
I believe it’s stupid for a teenager to identify himself with a particular political party. I realised that a month ago when I had a talk with a schoolmate who wanted to identify me as either a democrat or a communist — a friend or an enemy. I said I was neither but he got annoyed. We couldn’t understand each other.
I’ll be 18 soon and then I’ll have to vote for a political party. But I don’t feel I’m prepared to make such a choice. I think I’ll need some time to explore and keep an open mind because I really want to be free. I’d like to be a spectator of it all rather than playing on one team or another. I want to see the whole arena and then find out for myself which team is better for me.
Speaker 2
I’m more interested in politics than any of my classmates. I first got this interest when I started listening to rock music. The lyrics of the bands I listened to told me a lot about various political issues, current events and human rights abuse. Music has opened my mind to the world of politics and now I think I have quite a balanced view of it.
When I am old enough to vote, I think I’ll vote for a personality rather than for a political party because I want to remain independent and keep my freedom of choice.

I’m just 16 now and I understand that my life experience is very limited but that doesn’t mean that I. as a teenager, can’t start participating actively in my society. For all teenagers, it wtll soon be our turn to develop cutting edge technology, discover cures for diseases and rule our countries.
That’s why I’m so interested in everything that’s happening around me. My own parents’ political views also play an important role in my life. They have very different views on politics, so they always argue certain issues and I learn a lot from them.

Winston Churchill is thought to be one of the best providers of political quotes. But I can’t agree with one of his statements: «Any man who is under 30 and is not a liberal has no heart; and any man who is over 30 and not a conservative has no brains.»
I’m nearly 18 and I’m going to vote soon. I believe I have both a heart and brains but my political views do not fall into one category. At one time I was a democrat, at another I was very left wing. Since then I have been unsure about where I belong in the political world.
But what I do know for sure is that I want a stable government under a moderate leader.

I have to say I’m not very interested in politics. I just don’t trust the politicians and I don’t see much difference between the various political parties. Perhaps it’s because I never watch TV programmes about politics or read newspaper articles about
political issues. I have lots of other things which are more exciting than those endless political games and discussions. I understand that I should be interested but I just can’t help it. When I’m 18, I’m supposed to vote but I’m not sure whether I’m going to or not. I don’t believe it will make any difference.
