What Do Chemists Do?
Our job is to work out recommendations of how the food should be stored in order to keep it fresh. The problem is that due to interaction of different chemical elements the food contains, it changes and its properties change to. What we need to is to slow down the chemical reactions. Partially, it can be done when we pack foe food and prevent oxygen from getting in touch with it. Oxygen you know is foe essential element in most chemical reactions.
You know that all people want to eat and the population of the planet is growing. As a result, we need more and more food every year. We develop fertilizers and insecticides that are necessary to grow large crops. It goes without saying that our products should be safe and we need to perform all kinds of tests and experiments to check their impacts on the environment. We also try to change the features of the crops. By means of genetics and chemistry we develop crops that are easier to transport or that have a longer shelf life.
I’d say we spend more time in field studies than our colleagues in other branches of chemistry. We study how different substances in the earth interact with each other and what sort of chemical reactions are going on there. We also evaluate how mining operations may affect the environment, whether the products and the wastes of petroleum and gas companies can contaminate the water and the soil. It’s our job to prevent chemical reactions that could cause explosions. In other words, our job is to evaluate the risks and benefits of any mining and raw materials extraction projects.
