Dmitri Hvorostovsky was one of the most famous singers in the world. He often (1) takes part in performances in different countries and always (2) becomes the centre of attention. Some fans (3) call him the “Elvis of opera”. When Hvorostovsky heard about this, he (4) thought it was a huge compliment to him, since Elvis (5) was a kind of revolutionary.
Hvorostovsky was born in Krasnoyarsk in Siberia — there he (6) studied at school, and for some time (7) was the singer in a rock band where he (8) played heavy metal.
After Hvorostovsky (9) had won several professional contests in Russia, famous opera singer Irina Arkhipova (10) encouraged him to take part in the Cardiff Singer of the World competition in 1989. He (11) won it and his world career (12) was launched.
