The play I would like to summarize is “The Cherry Orchard” by Anton Chekhov. It is a famous Russian play about an old aristocratic family that is losing its estate. Madame Ranevskaya returns home after many years abroad and finds that the cherry orchard must be sold. The family is unable to save the property because they have no money and do not want to change their way of life. Lopakhin, a businessman and the son of a former serf, suggests cutting down the orchard and building summer cottages. However, the family does not take his advice seriously. In the end, Lopakhin buys the estate himself. This is a very emotional moment because it shows the end of the old social order. The cherry orchard becomes a symbol of beauty, memory, and the past. The characters are sad, but they cannot stop the changes in society. The play combines comedy and tragedy and makes the audience think about time, loss, and responsibility.
