When a car is moving, the passengers inside it are also moving at the same velocity. If the driver pulls up abruptly, the car stops, but the passengers continue to move due to inertia. Without safety belts, they can bump into the front part of the car or even be thrown through the windscreen. Safety belts act on the body inside the car and help keep the passenger in place, so they reduce the risk of injury.
