a) Look at these two portraits and guess who these people are. What achievements are they most famous for?
b) Write a text of about 400—500 words to present any chemistry scientist. You can write about one of the scientists from the pictures above or suggest any other name.
Steps to follow:
- Brainstorm for any information about the scientist. Register all the information you can recall on the paper / tablet / any electronic device.
- Cross out the irrelevant information.
- Make up a plan for your text.
- Research for additional information you need to fit the items of your plan.
- Write the first draft.
- Critically read it. Cross out the irrelevant information, rearrange the ideas if necessary.
- Write down the second draft. Critically read it. If it suits you in general, do all the necessary editing (make vocabulary, stylistic, and spelling improvements). Write down the final draft. If it doesn’t suit you, go back to step 3.
- Present your text to the class.
One of the most famous chemistry scientists is Dmitri Mendeleev. He was a Russian chemist who is best known for creating the Periodic Table of Elements. This discovery changed chemistry forever, because it helped scientists understand the properties of elements and predict new ones.
Mendeleev was born in 1834 in Tobolsk, Siberia. He studied at the Main Pedagogical Institute in St. Petersburg and later became a professor. He worked hard to organize all known chemical elements according to their atomic mass and chemical properties. In 1869, he presented his Periodic Table, and it became one of the most important achievements in the history of science.
What made Mendeleev especially remarkable was that he left empty spaces in his table for elements that had not yet been discovered. Later, scientists found these elements, and they matched his predictions. This proved that his ideas were very accurate.
Mendeleev also made important contributions to chemistry, physics, and metrology. He wrote many scientific works and helped develop Russian science. Although he is famous all over the world, his name is most often connected with the Periodic Table.
Dmitri Mendeleev is remembered as a brilliant scientist whose work is still used by students and researchers today. His discovery remains one of the foundations of modern chemistry.
