Work in pairs. Ask and answer these questions.
- To enroll at university or vocational college, would you rather have an interview or an entrance exam?
- How does an interview differ from an entrance exam?
- Why do people get nervous before entrance exams?
- What educational institutions have an “open admission” policy in Russia?
- What graduate degrees do you know? Describe them.
- Why do additional qualifications make a person more employable?
- Who are some of the university graduates you know? What kind of professional careers have they made?
I would rather have an interview, because it is less stressful and gives me a chance to show my personality.
An interview is a conversation with questions and answers, while an entrance exam checks your knowledge in a test form.
People get nervous before entrance exams because they are afraid of making mistakes and failing to enter the institution they want.
In Russia, some vocational colleges and universities have an open admission policy.
I know such graduate degrees as bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and PhD. A bachelor’s degree is the first university degree, a master’s degree is the next level, and a PhD is a research degree.
Additional qualifications make a person more employable because they show extra skills and knowledge, so employers can trust such a candidate more.
Some university graduates I know are my relatives and family friends. They have made careers in teaching, engineering, medicine, and business.
