Dmitri Hvorostovsky is one of the best-known singers in the world. He often performs in different countries and always becomes the centre of attention. Some fans call him the “Elvis of opera”. When Hvorostovsky heard this, he thought it was a huge compliment because Elvis was a kind of revolutionary for him.
Hvorostovsky was born in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia. He went to school there and, for some time, was the lead singer in a rock band that played heavy metal. After Hvorostovsky had won several professional competitions in Russia, Irina Arkhipova suggested that he should enter the Cardiff Singer of the World competition in 1989. He won it, and that was how his career began.
His singing style is very lyrical and is sometimes called “old school”. He has worked with theatres and singers from all over the world. A few years ago, he recorded an album with Olga Borodina.
Hvorostovsky now has a home in London and speaks good English. He works hard and tries to lead a healthy lifestyle. He admitted that he had given up smoking and drinking alcohol many years ago. He knew that this would help him perform at the highest level in his profession.
