1. A social networking system is an online network of people linked together in much the same way documents are linked together on the web.
2. You can become part of one by registering on a web page and sending invitations to your friends, or by joining on the invitation of a trusted third party.
3. The benefits are that you can contact people more easily, share information, find friends, business contacts or employment opportunities, and join people with similar interests.
4. Such systems are different because some are invitation-only, some allow anyone to join but restrict newcomers, and others maintain separate, non-overlapping networks.
5. The most popular system was called Friendster. It developed very quickly: within three months it had over a million members, and a year later the number had passed seven million.
6. The drawbacks are that many members are inactive, using the systems takes time and effort, “friends of friends” are not always people you want to know, and different networks are often separate, which makes it hard to keep a coherent contact list.
