One of the most famous Russian plays is The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekhov. The play tells the story of an old aristocratic family that is losing its estate. Madame Ranevskaya returns home after many years abroad. She is happy to see the cherry orchard again, but she does not understand how serious the family’s financial problems are. Lopakhin, a merchant, suggests cutting down the orchard and building summer cottages on the land. However, Ranevskaya and her brother Gayev cannot accept this idea. They live in memories of the past and hope that everything will somehow work out. In the end, the estate is sold at auction. Lopakhin buys it, although he once belonged to a peasant family. The cherry orchard is cut down, and the sound of axes marks the end of an old way of life. The play shows the conflict between the past and the future. It also makes the reader think about change, memory, and responsibility.
