One of the most famous Russian plays is The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekhov. The play tells the story of an old noble family that is losing its estate. Lyubov Ranevskaya returns home after many years abroad. She is happy to see the cherry orchard, which is very dear to her. However, the family is in debt and cannot save the property. Lopakhin, a businessman, suggests cutting down the orchard and building summer houses. Ranevskaya and her brother Gayev do not want to accept this practical idea. They live in memories of the past and hope that everything will somehow be all right. In the end, Lopakhin buys the estate himself. The cherry orchard is sold and later cut down. The play shows the conflict between the old way of life and the new one. It also makes the reader think about change, memory, and the passing of time.
