Work in groups. Follow the steps:
a) Read the article your teacher gives to your group. Help each other to understand it. Use a dictionary if necessary.
b) Fill in the line which corresponds with your group’s text in the table in your Workbook.
c) Form new groups with at least one member from each of the other groups. Do not show your notes to the new group.
d) Take it in turns to ask and answer questions about the different articles so that you can fill in the whole table.
e) Go back to your first group. Compare your notes and reconstruct the rest of the articles. Discuss your results in the groups.
1. Are Aliens Coming? — The article says that people have been interested in UFOs for years, but there is no real proof that extraterrestrials exist. The Roswell case caused a big discussion, but the film was proved to be a fake.
2. Great Inventions — The article is about strange inventions and fake machines. It tells about Charles Redheffer’s perpetual motion machine and Joe Newman’s “energy machine”, which were both shown to be fraudulent.
3. IQ — a Number That Influences Your Life — The article explains that IQ was long believed to be mostly inherited. It mentions Sir Cyril Burt, whose studies were later found to be unreliable and partly invented.
4. Crop Circles — The article describes crop circles and the many theories about their origin. In the end, two frauds confessed that they had made the circles with a special press.
