Read Sophie’s letter to the local magazine and give her some advice. Explain your reasons.
Dear readers of «Family Life»!
I’m writing to ask you for advice on a private but very important matter. My daughter is completing her school education and naturally the family are involved in the discussion about her future career. Yesterday my daughter said that she had made her choice and she would be a tube train driver. It sounds so weird to me! Traditionally only boys could be train drivers, and I can’t imagine my delicate girl doing a job like that! What arguments should I use to talk her out of it? Or should I accept her choice and not intervene in her life?
Grateful for any comments from you.
Yours,
Sophie Chester
I think Sophie should accept her daughter’s choice and support her. A job should be chosen according to a person’s abilities and interests, not according to gender stereotypes. If her daughter really wants to be a tube train driver, she may be responsible, hardworking and brave enough for this profession.
It is important to remember that nowadays women can do many jobs that were once considered “for men only”. Sophie should talk to her daughter calmly, ask why she wants this career and discuss the difficulties and advantages of the job. This way she will show respect and keep a good relationship with her daughter.
So my advice is: do not try to talk her out of it. Encourage her to follow her dream and make her own decision.
