Упр.9 What’s economic geography about? ГДЗ Enjoy English 11 класс
Work in pairs. Say what advantages and disadvantages each of the means of transportation have. Compare them against some of the criteria below.
An efficient transportation network is essential for the sustainable development of any country.
- its weight-carrying ability (how much of a load it’s able to transport)
- its speed (how quickly the load can be delivered to its destination)
- its reliability (whether the transport is independent from weather conditions)
- its safety (whether the transport is safe enough for the people who operate it, for the people living nearby, and for the environment)
- its ability to work in hard-to-reach regions (if the transport is able to do without proper roads, runways, etc.)
- its construction costs (how much it takes to build the transport itself and its operational facilities)
- its maintenance costs (how much it costs to maintain the transport itself and all the necessary facilities in appropriate operational order)
Pipelines are good for transporting gas and oil. This way of transport is very reliable because it does not depend on weather conditions, and oil and gas can be delivered to far destinations. However, the construction costs are very high. Maintaining pipelines can be difficult too, as they often go through poorly populated regions.
Road transport is flexible and can reach almost any place. It is convenient for short and medium distances and is good for delivering small loads. However, it is not very fast, depends on weather and road conditions, and can be less safe and more harmful to the environment.
Rail transport is efficient for carrying heavy loads over long distances. It is quite reliable, safe, and less affected by weather than road transport. On the other hand, it needs expensive construction and maintenance of tracks and stations, and it cannot work in places without railways.
Air transport is the fastest way to deliver people and goods. It is useful for long distances and hard-to-reach regions. However, it has low weight-carrying ability, very high construction and maintenance costs, and it depends on weather conditions.
Water transport can carry very heavy and large loads. It is cheap for transporting goods over long distances and is quite reliable. But it is slow, depends on ports and waterways, and cannot be used in many inland regions.
