Comment on the following statement: Teenagers get too much freedom nowadays. What is your opinion? Do you agree with this statement? Write 200–250 words. Use the following plan.
- Make an introduction (state the problem).
- Express your personal opinion and give 2–3 reasons for your opinion.
- Express an opposing opinion and give 1–2 reasons for this opposing opinion.
- Explain why you don’t agree with the opposing opinion.
- Make a conclusion restating your position.

- Think of a way to paraphrase the statement to use in the introduction.
- Write a list of arguments to support your opinion. Choose 2–3 arguments which you can develop into a paragraph.
- Consider what other people may think about the problem. Make a list of other arguments and choose 1–2 which you can develop into a paragraph.
- Think of counterarguments you can use to disagree with the opposing opinion.
- Think of the links in the paragraphs and between them. Use the expressions from Ex. 95.
- Think about how to summarise the arguments and restate your opinion in the final paragraph.
- Check your essay and correct any mistakes.
Nowadays many people believe that teenagers are given too much freedom. This issue is often discussed because young people want independence, while adults are worried about their behaviour and safety.
In my opinion, teenagers do not get too much freedom. On the contrary, they often need more trust and responsibility. First, freedom helps teenagers learn to make their own decisions and become independent. Second, when parents give their children some freedom, teenagers usually feel respected and are more willing to talk honestly with adults. Finally, freedom is important for personal growth, because young people can try new activities, discover their interests and develop their talents.
However, some people think that teenagers really have too much freedom. They say that young people can spend too much time online, ignore rules and make bad choices. Besides, some teenagers are not mature enough to understand the consequences of their actions.
I cannot agree with this opinion. Of course, teenagers should have limits, but strict control is not the best solution. If parents explain rules clearly and support their children, teenagers usually behave more responsibly. Freedom with guidance is much better than complete control.
To sum up, I do not think that teenagers get too much freedom nowadays. They need a balance between independence and responsibility, and this helps them grow into mature and confident adults.
