Example description:
The festival I would like to describe is Maslenitsa, a traditional Russian festival. It takes place in late February or early March, just before Lent.
Maslenitsa originates from ancient pagan times, but later it became a Christian holiday too. It used to involve saying goodbye to winter and welcoming spring. Nowadays people commemorate this festival with games, songs, dancing and burning a straw effigy of winter.
People wear bright clothes and warm coats because the weather is still cold. The main dish is pancakes, or blini, which are often served with butter, sour cream, jam or honey.
Maslenitsa is very popular because it is cheerful, colourful and full of traditions. It brings people together and creates a festive mood.
