Work in small groups of 3. Act out situations A and B.

Situation A. Making a Medical Appointment

    Student 1 (patient)
You are taking a course in an International language school. This morning you do not feel well and you decide to see the campus doctor. Call the doctor’s office and arrange the appointment for the nearest possible time. It’s 8.45 am at the moment.

Student 2 (receptionist in a medical centre)

    1. Receive a telephone call. Find out in brief what the patient’s problem is.
    2. Assign the time for the patient’s visit. According to the doctor’s schedule, he / she is available today from 10.00 till 11.00 and from 16.00 till 17.00.
    3. Take the patient’s name and confirm the time.

Situation B. In the Doctor’s Office

    Student 1 (patient)
When at the receptionist’s desk, introduce yourself. When in the doctor’s office, describe how you feel. Answer the doctor’s questions. Ask the doctor questions to make sure you know what to do.

    Student 2 (receptionist)
When the patient arrives, see him / her to the doctor.

    Student 3 (doctor)
Receive the patient. Ask appropriate questions to find out what the problem could be. Perform some medical tests:

    • take the patient’s temperature;
    • do the express blood test (the result is ready almost instantly);
    • check their tongue etc.

Tell the patient what the disease is. Write a prescription and explain how often to take the medicine.

Patient: Good morning. I’m not feeling well and I’d like to see the doctor as soon as possible.

Receptionist: What seems to be the problem?

Patient: I have a sore throat, a headache and a runny nose.

Receptionist: I see. The doctor is available today from 10.00 to 11.00 and from 16.00 to 17.00. Can you come at 10.00?

Patient: Yes, that’s fine.

Receptionist: May I have your name, please?

Patient: My name is Alex Brown.

Receptionist: Thank you, Mr Brown. Your appointment is at 10.00 today.

Sample dialogue for Situation B:

Receptionist: Good morning. Please come this way. The doctor will see you now.

Doctor: Good morning. What’s the matter?

Patient: Good morning, doctor. I have a sore throat, a headache and a high temperature. I’m coughing and sneezing too.

Doctor: How long have you been feeling like this?

Patient: Since this morning.

Doctor: Let me take your temperature. Please open your mouth and show me your tongue. Take a deep breath.

Patient: All right.

Doctor: Your temperature is high, but the blood test is fine. You have a cold.

Patient: Is it serious?

Doctor: No, it’s not serious. You need to stay in bed for a couple of days and take this medicine three times a day.

Patient: How often should I take it?

Doctor: Three times a day after meals. I’ll give you a prescription.

Patient: Thank you, doctor.
