Businesses that made a loss: airlines, because many flights were cancelled and they lost about £150 million a day.

Businesses that made a profit:

• Eurostar, because all its high-speed trains were full;
• ferry companies, because many people used ferries to cross the English Channel;
• taxi companies, because they received very expensive orders;
• hotels, because they raised their prices when many travellers were stranded.

The Royal Navy was not a business, so it did not make a profit.
