Farmers’ markets nearly disappeared in the UK because supermarkets became more convenient, cheaper and offered a wider choice of products all year round. Big stores also used modern transport and storage, so people got used to buying everything in one place.
Positive effects of globalisation in supermarkets: a wide choice of goods, lower prices, products from different countries, and better availability all year round.
Negative effects: local farmers may lose customers, small shops can close, food may travel long distances, and products can be less fresh.
At local farmers’ markets, the positive effects are fresh local food, support for local producers and a more personal atmosphere. The negative effects are higher prices, a smaller choice and fewer products in winter.
