Exams are necessary because they help teachers check what students have learned. They can also motivate pupils to study regularly and show whether they are ready for further education or work. However, exams have some disadvantages because they often cause stress and do not always show a student’s real abilities. A good exam should check not only memory but also understanding, critical thinking and the ability to use knowledge in practice. Many intelligent people fail their exams because they are nervous or cannot work well under time pressure. Some of them may also have health problems or be unfamiliar with the exam format. I would prefer to take exams in the form of projects and oral presentations. This form would give students a chance to explain their ideas and demonstrate their creativity. Written tests could also be included, but they should not be the only way of assessing knowledge. In my opinion, a combination of different forms would make exams fairer and more useful.
