Work in groups. Discuss the following questions and suggest answers. Write them down.

1. How will the volcanic eruption affect businesses? Who will make a loss? Who will make a profit?
2. Will it affect people on other continents? Why?/Why not?
3. Why is the volcanic ash dangerous for aeroplanes?
4. What will the re-opening of European airports depend on?

1. The volcanic eruption will affect businesses badly. Airlines, travel agencies, hotels and shops near the airports will make a loss, while some companies that sell masks, food and emergency supplies may make a profit.

2. Yes, it may affect people on other continents because flights between countries and continents can be cancelled or delayed, so many people will not be able to travel or get goods on time.

3. Volcanic ash is dangerous for aeroplanes because it can damage engines, block air filters and reduce visibility.

4. The re-opening of European airports will depend on the amount of ash in the air and on whether it is safe for planes to fly.
