1. The word order is inverted for emphasis. This structure is used after negative or limiting adverbials such as never, hardly, only later, under no circumstances.

a) Never before had I been so frightened.

b) Hardly had I reached the corner when I heard the strange sound again.

c) Only later did she realise what had happened.

d) Under no circumstances should you tell this secret to anyone.

2. In the first sentence, the emphasis is on the transparent form of a hooded monk. In the second sentence, the emphasis is on the bed.
