Technology: A blessing or a menace?
In the 20th century we saw many revolutionary inventions that promised to improve our lives and to reduce the amount of work we do. The belief was that the more technology we allowed into our lives the better our lives would be.
But many technological 1) discoveries have caused more problems than they have solved. It is an accepted fact that some household 2) appliances have increased rather than reduced the amount of work we do around the home. For example, the more kitchen equipment you have, the more work you do in the kitchen.
But this is not the only problem modern technology has had. Some technology has turned out to be more of a nuisance than a good thing. Look at the mobile phone. There is no doubt that when it was invented, the regular phone, or landline, was an invention that made communication easier and more 3) effective. However, the mobile phone has crossed that line. In many situations it is an 4) invasion of privacy and in others just plain rude. How many times have you been sitting chatting with someone over coffee or dinner when the person you’re with receives a call? Instead of turning it off or just ignoring the call, they answer it. Clearly, you are not as important as the 5) caller. Let’s stop fooling ourselves. Life has not improved in the way the technological revolution of the 20th century had promised it would. It has 6) simply got worse.

The main (1) discoveries used against the space programme is that the enormous amount of money it costs could be better spent on solving problems such as poverty and environmental damage here on Earth. Initially, this view sounds persuasive, (2) appliances when confronted with how huge the amounts of money we are talking about actually are. Surely, the argument goes, if, instead of sending hundreds of billions of dollars up into space for a (3) effective walk on the Moon or a few glossy colour photographs of Mars, we channelled the funds into worthwhile projects on our own planet, we could solve all the world’s problems in about as short a time as it takes for the space shuttle to circle the globe. How (4)… invasion and — perhaps sadly- how untrue. The fallacy of that argument is in the idea that all of the money allotted to the space programme is wasted in space. It isn’t. None of the money goes into space at all. It stays right here on Rarth and is fed back into the economy. Take the astronauts and tens of thousands of other people who are involved in whatever way with the space programme. They spend their salaries — and pay tax on them here on Earth. I hat tax is used by governments to do a number of important things: build hospitals and schools, provide pensions, pay for the police service and, yes, fund the space programme, lake the cost of all the spacecraft, the technology inside them and the research that’s done to create that technology. All of that money goes to companies here on Earth, companies which pay tax if they make a profit and pay salaries to their (5) caller, who then pay tax to the government which builds hospitals, etc.
Looking at the other way round, what would happen if all the governments in the world which have a space programme dosed their programmes down tomorrow? Would they have a lot more money to spend on other things? Only for a short time, because along with the immediate savings there would be enormous costs from the increased unemployment and (6) simply in taxes received.

Technical devices have made our lives much easier and more comfortable. We can communicate quickly, find information in seconds, study online, and save time on everyday tasks. I use my smartphone every day for calls, messages, the internet, and music. I also use a laptop for studying and watching videos. Sometimes technical devices create problems: they can distract us, waste time, or stop working at the wrong moment. I wish I had a modern tablet because it would be convenient for reading, studying, and drawing.
