My friend was sent a text message a few minutes ago. How was it received so quickly? The service works like this: the country is divided into areas called cells. Each cell is served by a relay tower. Our messages are constantly being received and sent by these towers. Once the send button has been pressed, the message is sent to the nearest relay tower by the mobile phone. The message is then transmitted to the nearest switching centre, where it is checked and sent on. In space, a satellite is waiting to relay messages. Messages are being sent all the time by switching centres. When my friend’s message has been sent to the satellite, it is beamed to her.
