- IN YOUR CULTURE
Write something of that sort about your family life. Do you have similar problems in your home or at school? How do you cope with your problems? Do you receive a Family Allowance or other benefits? How much is it? What do you or your family spend it on?
Yes, he does. Adrian receives the benefit he is entitled to, but his mother spends it on gin and cigarettes.
spendthrift — B. a person who cannot spend money wisely
to go berserk — A. to become angry

Yes, it is. The menu with hamburger, baked beans, chips, yoghurt or a doughnut is a typical school dinner for Adrian. No, it is not. At present, he does not have proper hot school dinners; they have been phased out.
Adrian does not approve of his mother’s spending money on gin and cigarettes and of the poor school dinners. He thinks his mother wastes the family allowance, and he believes the school food is unhealthy and not enough to build strong bones and muscles.
Adrian’s father does not approve of free education because he thinks school should be free, so he is angry when he has to pay for a school trip.
Family Allowance is a government benefit paid to families with children to help them support them financially.
Adrian makes the impression of a sensitive, thoughtful and rather pessimistic boy. He worries about family money, school food and his future. He may be over-reacting a little, but his complaints are understandable.
Serious: his mother’s misuse of money, poor school dinners.
Easy to solve: the problem with school trip money.
Not a problem at all: some of his complaints sound exaggerated, for example his dramatic attitude to everyday things.
In my family we do not have such serious problems. Sometimes we argue about money or schoolwork, but we try to discuss everything calmly. If we have a problem, we talk about it and find a solution together. We do not receive a Family Allowance, but if we did, we would spend it on food, clothes and school needs.
