Задача

In the Newsweek magazine one can sometimes find articles, which contain different people’s opinions on the problems of a welfare state.

  1. What are some of these opinions? (AB Unit 5, ex. 5)
  2. Which of these opinions can be used as examples to support what Mr Reed, Mr Green and Mrs Hope say about the advantages and disadvantages of the welfare state?
  3. Which of the opinions do you agree or disagree with? Why?
Подробный ответ

1) Some people think that a welfare state is necessary because it helps those who really need support. Others believe that benefits are often given to people who do not need them. Some also say that the welfare state makes people lazy and dependent on the government. At the same time, there are opinions that it protects people from poverty and gives everyone a fair chance in life.

2) The opinion about child benefit can be used to support Mr Reed’s point of view. It shows that benefits are sometimes available to everybody, even to middle-class people who do not really need financial help.

3) I agree that benefits should go mainly to people who really need them. In my opinion, the welfare state should help poor, sick, unemployed and elderly people, but it should not give money to those who can support themselves.
