IN YOUR CULTURE
- Which facts from the life of the English-speaking countries mentioned above can be applied (применять) to Russia (to your region)?
- What other facts show the influence of geography on the life of Russian people?
Russia is a huge country, so its geographical position strongly influences people’s lives. Some facts from English-speaking countries can also be applied to Russia: the climate affects clothes, housing and everyday habits; people in the north need warmer homes and transport; and the sea or rivers are important for trade and travel.
Other facts show the influence of geography on Russian life too. In many regions people have to live and work in very cold weather, so they use special heating systems and winter transport. In the Far North and Siberia, distances between towns are very large, so planes, trains and long roads are especially important. In the south, the climate is milder, so agriculture is more developed there. Russia’s rich natural resources also influence industry and the economy.
