Give your opinion and comment on these: 1. the villagers’ attitude to Deer Hunter and White Corn Maiden before and after their marriage; 2. the villagers’ fears on seeing the person “who no longer belonged to the life of the living”; 3. Deer Hunter’s promise to have everlasting feeling of love for his wife; 4. Deer Hunter’s behaviour after he began to notice certain alterations in his wife; 5. Which of the two lovers (or both?) is to blame for what had happened? The share of punishment each of them got. 6. The necessity to follow the traditions and conventions of the society where you belong.

1. Before their marriage the villagers admired Deer Hunter and White Corn Maiden, but after the wedding they became suspicious and hostile. They could not accept the lovers’ happiness because it went against their traditions.

2. The villagers were frightened because they saw a person who no longer belonged to the world of the living. They felt that something supernatural and dangerous had happened.

3. Deer Hunter’s promise to love his wife forever shows that he was sincere and deeply devoted. He believed that true love should be eternal.

4. After he noticed the changes in his wife, Deer Hunter behaved with fear and confusion. He did not understand what was happening and could not save her.

5. Both lovers are to blame only partly. Deer Hunter broke the traditional rules by marrying White Corn Maiden, and she also violated the laws of her people. However, the main punishment fell on White Corn Maiden, while Deer Hunter suffered emotionally and lost his beloved wife.

6. Traditions and social conventions are important because they keep order in society and unite people. At the same time, blind obedience to them can destroy personal happiness, so they should not be followed without thought.
