She began writing at the end of the First World War, when she created Hercule Poirot — the most popular sleuth in fiction since Sherlock Holmes. Poirot, Miss Marple and her other detectives have appeared in numerous films, radio programmes, television films and stage plays based on her books. Apart from crime stories Agatha Christie wrote six romantic novels under the pen name Mary Westmacott, several plays, a book of poems and an autobiography. She assisted her archaeologist husband Sir Max Mallowan on many expeditions to the Middle East. In 1971 she was awarded the title of Dame of the British Empire. Death Comes As the End is one of her few novels when she steps into the past and lays scene in the exotic setting of Ancient Egypt. A. Yes, I recognise the lady in the photo — it is Agatha Christie, the famous English crime-story writer. She is known as the “Queen of Crime”. Her most famous detectives are Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, and her books have been turned into many films, TV programmes and plays.
B. I have learned that Agatha Christie began writing at the end of the First World War. Besides crime stories, she also wrote six romantic novels under the pen name Mary Westmacott, several plays, a book of poems and an autobiography. She helped her husband, Sir Max Mallowan, on archaeological expeditions to the Middle East, and in 1971 she was awarded the title of Dame of the British Empire. I also learned that Death Comes As the End is one of her few historical novels, set in Ancient Egypt.
