Задача

A. Read the text and say:

  • where and when the scene is laid;
  • what members of Renisenb’s household are mentioned in it;
  • what she feels about her home after staying away.

B. Answer the questions.

  1. Why do you think Renisenb returned home?
  2. What are her brothers’ names? Are they alike or different? What information is given in the text about their disposition?
  3. Why do you think Yahmose “was always in a state of anxiety”?
  4. What was Hori’s occupation? Was he a member of Renisenb’s family? What did Renisenb think of this man?
  5. Why were the marks in Renisenb’s father’s papyrus meaningless to her? Why, in your opinion, does the author mention Renisenb’s “untutored eyes”?
  6. Renisenb regarded writing and reading as a wonder. Can you explain why? Are these skills wondrous to you? Do you think the idea of “a wonder” changes with time? Do timeless wonders exist?
  7. Why, in your opinion, did the ability to write or to read make no difference to Renisenb? Are these skills of importance nowadays? Do you think reading as a process of gaining knowledge and information is beginning to lack significance now? How can you account for it?
  8. What do you think Hori meant when he mentioned evil that “breeds from within”? Do you think this evil will reveal itself in the course of the story? In what way, do you think, the plot will develop remembering that the story was written by Agatha Christie?
Подробный ответ
  1. Renisenb returned home because her husband Khay had died, and she came back widowed to her father’s house.
  2. Her brothers are Yahmose and Sobek. They are different: Sobek is cheerful, confident and lively, while Yahmose is slow, prudent, anxious and doubtful.
  3. Yahmose was always anxious because he was responsible for managing the family’s farmlands and was naturally cautious and worried about possible difficulties.
  4. Hori was her father’s man of business and affairs, so he was not a member of Renisenb’s family. Renisenb thought kindly of him: she remembered him as gentle, grave and affectionate, and she was fond of him.
  5. The marks were meaningless to her because she could not read. The words “untutored eyes” show that she had no education in reading and writing.
  6. She regarded writing and reading as a wonder because they seemed mysterious and difficult to her. They are still wonderful in a way, though people take them for granted now. The idea of a “wonder” does change with time, but some timeless wonders do exist, for example, nature, love, life and human thought.
  7. Writing and reading made no difference to Renisenb because she had never needed them in her daily life. Nowadays these skills are still very important, though many people get information from the internet, videos and audio sources. Reading may seem less central for some people, but it is still one of the main ways to gain knowledge and think deeply.
  8. Hori meant that evil can grow secretly inside a person or a family, without any visible signs, until it destroys everything from within. Yes, this evil will probably become important in the story. Since it is an Agatha Christie story, the plot will likely develop into a mystery with hidden tensions, secrets and a possible crime.
