Задача
Read the text and answer the questions after it.
- What does Oscar Wilde ridicule when he reports the words of one of the Town Councillors and his impression of the statue?
- With what human qualities did the sensible mother and the disappointed man associate the statue of the Happy Prince?
- What made the Happy Prince suffer when he became a statue? Why did he need help?
- What impression is the Swallow supposed to make on the reader? Why is the episode of his flirting with the Reed included in the story? What excuses did the Swallow find for falling out of love with the Reed?
- How did the Happy Prince describe his life to the Swallow? Do you think he had any regrets? What regrets?
- Why did the seamstress’s life circumstances touch the Happy Prince so much?
- In what way did the Swallow help the family? How was he rewarded?
- Do you know the end of the story about the Happy Prince? (If not, make it up and tell your friends your own version. Don’t forget to compare it with Oscar Wilde’s.)
Подробный ответ
- Oscar Wilde ridicules the Town Councillors’ vanity, their pretended artistic taste, and their shallow practical-mindedness.
- The sensible mother associated the statue with beauty and usefulness, while the disappointed man associated it with happiness.
- The Happy Prince suffered because, after death, he could see all the ugliness and misery of the city. He needed help because his heart was made of lead and he could not move to help the poor himself.
- The Swallow is meant to seem lively, selfish at first, but also charming and humorous. The episode with the Reed shows his light-mindedness and makes the story more vivid and ironic. He excused himself by saying that the Reed had no conversation, was a coquette, and that she did not love travelling, while he did.
- The Happy Prince said that he had lived in the Palace of Sans-Souci, where sorrow was not allowed to enter, and that he had been happy only in the sense of enjoying pleasure. Yes, he probably had regrets: he regretted that he had lived in ignorance of real suffering and had not helped others.
- The seamstress’s poverty, her tiredness, and her sick little boy touched the Happy Prince because he could see their misery clearly and felt deep pity for them.
- The Swallow brought the ruby to the seamstress’s house. He laid it on the table beside her thimble and fanned the boy’s forehead with his wings. He was rewarded with the Prince’s gratitude and the warm feeling that comes from doing a good action.
- At the end, the Swallow stayed with the Happy Prince until winter came. He kissed the Prince and died of cold at his feet. Then the Prince’s lead heart broke, and the statue was taken down and melted. In the end, the angel took the dead Swallow and the Prince’s lead heart to Heaven, where they were praised as the two most precious things in the city.
