- Hori’s prediction is partly true. Education can make people more self-confident and sometimes arrogant, and some educated people really do begin to look down on manual workers. However, reading and writing do not necessarily make a person cruel or proud. Much depends on character, upbringing and values. Education can also teach respect for other people’s work.
- Words can become very real and powerful because they influence people’s thoughts, feelings and actions. A promise, a law, a warning, a prayer or a lie written down can change a person’s life. Even though words are not physical things, they can create trust, fear, hope or hatred, so they often have a strong effect on reality.
- Hori is not completely wrong, but he does exaggerate. The world really does change all the time, even when the changes are not obvious at once. People grow older, relationships change, societies develop, and old traditions disappear. For example, a family may seem stable for years, but later its members may become distant or their views may change. So stability is often only temporary.
